Community Groups

Bushwalking Victoria  An organization with comprehensive and professional information about many aspects of bushwalking across Victoria.

Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club  A well informed group with regular meetings and field excursions.

Castlemaine Historical Society   Archives held by the Society include early directories, voters lists, local newspaper index and some records and indexes concerning mining leases, rates, schools, churches and cemeteries.

Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests  An example of the whole being greater than the sum of the individual components – and some of the individuals are impressive enough on their own.  A competent and open group with interests in flora and fauna, bushwalking and local history.

Friends of Campbells Creek  The group started in 2000 to improve the environmental health of Campbells Creek and is doing excellent work.

Friends of Kalimna Park  Kalimna Park is a bushland reserve on the eastern outskirts of Castlemaine and is enthusiastically cared for by the FOKP.

Harcourt Valley Heritage and Tourism Centre  Want to know something about the Harcourt district in any period from pre-European to the present?  Contact HVHTC – a group brimming with information, ideas and activity.

Harcourt Valley Landcare Group  The initiators of what ultimately became the CCM Mount Alexander map.

Maldon Urban Landcare Group"  CCM's experience is that this group decides what it wants to do, works out how to do it, and goes ahead and does it.

Taradale Community Forum  This group, besides other activities, manages a website with a wealth of community and visitor information including some excellent suggestions for walks within the township or further afield.

Tarrangower Cactus Control Group  A well established group that provides a social content to tackling the wheel cactus problem in areas near Maldon.

Upper Spring Creek Landcare Group  An active landcare group operating in the Lockwood South, Lockwood and Shelbourne districts.

University of the Third Age, Bendigo  Besides a number of other activities. the Bendigo U3A organizes some excellent bushwalks.

Map Sources and Mapping Software

Avenza Maps  A free version of the Avenza app is available and it is an excellent entry to the use of maps on mobile devices.  It can load the geoPDF files provided by CCM as well as "millions" of other maps.

Geoscience Australia Geodetic Calculators  Convert UTM to latitude logitude (in three formats) or the other way about.  (Select WGS84 for the ellipsoid.)

GPS Utility  GPS Utility is a free program for GPS receiver interaction.  It manages, manipulates and maps details of waypoint, route and track information.

Mapshare  A DEECA interactive map site.  Once a user becomes familiar with the interactive process there is wealth of information available.  Maps of nominated areas may be printed.  Unfortunately the quality of these maps can be poor (in, for example, text rendering).

Mapwel  Mapwel is a commercial program for constructing KMZ files and for interacting with Garmin GPS receivers.

OziExplorer  OziExplorer is commercial software for interaction between map images and an extensive range of GPS receivers.  CCM supplies OziExplorer support files for CCM maps.

Victorian Government Data search  A very extensive site of public government data is available for downloading.  CCM obtains water course and contour data from this site.
Bird Observers and Photographers

Castlemaine Bird Walks  Is a companion site to the book Castlemaine Bird Walks by Damian Kelly.  The site contains Images of local birds, resources, opportunity for information exchange and suggestions for finding birds.

Natural Newstead  Observations of flora, fauna and landscape in central Victoria is an extensive site managed by Geoff Park  The site contains a large number of photographs and support material (including a list of "significant places") for bird observation.
Miscellaneous

The Atlas of Living Australia  The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is a digital and open infrastructure that assembles Australian biodiversity data from multiple sources and presents it in readily accessible manner.

Goldfields Library Corporation  The Kangaroo Flat and Castlemaine branches of Goldfields Library network have excellent facilities for the printing of A3 and A4 colour sheets and helpful staff.

Hosting Australia  Web hosting, web design, domain name management.  Hosting Australia is "one of the few remaining truly independent Australian Hosting providers, without an overseas parent or call center".

A map reading guide  A compact yet comprehensive guide to using topographical maps as a PDF download (10 MB) by Geoscience Australia.

OpenOffice  Is a free comprehensive professional level suite of office programs.  It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a multimedia presentation package, a database package and a mathematic formatting package.
